It was hard leaving Jax behind. So hard I had to run two red lights on my way to get my stuff and leave this city, because I didnât want to stop. If I had, Iâd probably go back to get him.
The song thatâs been sounding in my mind all afternoon, the first new song Iâve come up with in months, just stopped playing as soon as I left him in that parking lot and itâs not coming back.
But weâll never break out of our pattern if we just keep repeating it.
And weâll never break the pattern because he never fights for us. Even tonight he just stood there and let me drive away.
I kept repeating all that in my head and somehow managed to keep driving away.
The last thing I needed was Grizzly and his long-winded explanation about how heâs there to keep me safe from Jax who is plotting to hurt me.
As if.
Jax would never bring actual harm to me, not in a million years. I tried to explain that to him, but Grizzlyâs my fatherâs man through and through and heâll never doubt Scarâs word on anything. Or do anything other than follow his orders and his wishes.
Well, fine. Iâm on the road to my next tour stop and he can follow behind me all night, because I donât plan to stop.
My fatherâs calls just keep coming, with no pause in between now, which on its own means I should pick up. I donât want to, but I do it anyway.
âHarper, I think itâs better you come home now,â he says and his suggestion literally blocks my ability to take a breath.
âUmm, no,â I manage to sputter, but thatâs all I can say.
He clears his throat into the silence that follows. âHoney, I know how much this tour means to you. But thereâs a⦠we believe thatâ¦â
âJust say it, Dad,â I snap.
âMen are after you and Jax is helping them,â he says. âIâm on my way to get you and bring you home.â
âIâm sorry,â he adds when I donât say anything. âBut if you or Hunter had bothered to tell us what happened when you visited Jax in prison this wouldnât be such a problem.â
Iâm riding down a very dark stretch of road and havenât passed a light, let alone a house in miles. But thatâs nothing compared to the darkness thatâs filling me. I canât go back home. I only just managed to leave.
âDad, no,â I say. âIâm not coming home. Iâll accept the bodyguards you sent, but just to make you feel better. Iâm in no danger from Jax. He loves me and I love him.â
Itâs hard saying these words, because they roll so easily off my tongue and sound so true, yet I left him behind.
âI know you think that, I know heâs your first love and how that is, but⦠and Iâm sorry I have to be the one to tell you thisââ He stops talking abruptly, which is no surprise since he always gets weird when talking about feelings, but he interrupted me.
